Brown Flat Paper Bags

Kraft paper bags that do the job without falling apart mid-shift.

Brown flat paper bags are the workhorse of takeaway packaging. No gusset, no frills — just a flat kraft paper bag that's right for wrapping, bagging, and bundling across fish and chip shops, bakeries, burger joints, and food trucks.

We stock a range of sizes sold by the carton, so you're not running to the supermarket at 6pm on a Friday. Order before 4pm on any NZ business day and we dispatch the same day on stocked lines.

What Are Brown Flat Paper Bags Used For?

Flat paper bags have no side gusset, which means they sit slim and stack tight on the shelf. Common uses in hospo:

  • Fish and chips wrapped in paper, slipped into a flat bag
  • Bakery items — scrolls, muffins, slices — served over the counter
  • Burger and sandwich wraps for food trucks
  • Dry goods and grocery-style takeaway from cafes and delis
  • Sushi rolls and onigiri bagged for grab-and-go

They're not designed for wet or heavily greasy food without a liner or wrap inside. If you need a grease-resistant option, check our greaseproof bags.

Sizes and Specs

We carry brown flat paper bags in a range of sizes to suit different counter formats. All bags are made from natural kraft paper — the brown colour is the paper, not a dye.

  • Small (No. 1–2): Good for single bakery items, lollies, or small snacks
  • Medium (No. 4–6): The standard counter bag — fits a wrapped burger, a couple of slices, or a small sushi order
  • Large (No. 8–16): Built for bigger portions, fish and chip serves, or bulkier wraps

Sold by the carton. Exact carton quantities are listed on each product page. Mix and match sizes in a single order — no minimum per SKU once you hit the order threshold.

Kraft vs White: Which One Should You Buy?

Brown kraft is the default for most hospo operators. It's unbleached, it looks natural on the counter, and it costs less than white.

Choose brown kraft if: You want a clean, no-fuss look. It suits fish and chip shops, food trucks, and casual cafes. It's the bag customers expect when they buy something wrapped in paper.

Choose white if: Your branding is white-forward, or you're selling premium baked goods and want a cleaner presentation. White flat paper bags cost a bit more and are bleached — less of an option if sustainability is a talking point with your customers.

For most operators, brown is the right call. Less expensive, looks honest, works with almost every food style.

Ordering, Dispatch, and Bulk Pricing

We dispatch stocked lines the same day when you order before 4pm NZ business days. Brown flat paper bags are a stocked line — we keep cartons on the shelf, not on order.

Bulk pricing kicks in at carton quantities. The more cartons, the lower the per-bag cost. If you're running multiple sites or want to lock in stock for a busy season, get in touch and we'll sort a quote.

Custom print is available on flat paper bags with sufficient lead time and minimum order quantities. It's not a quick turnaround job — talk to us before you need them, not the week before opening.

Sustainability Notes

Natural brown kraft paper is recyclable and compostable in most NZ council green waste streams. It's one of the more straightforward packaging materials on the sustainability front — no plastic laminate, no coating on the standard bags.

If your local council or your customers ask about it, you can tell them it's plain kraft paper. That's the honest answer and it's a good one.

We don't make claims about certifications we haven't verified. If you need specific certification documentation for a supplier audit, contact us and we'll tell you exactly what we can and can't provide for each product line.

Frequently asked

What sizes do brown flat paper bags come in?+

We stock a range from small counter bags (No. 1–2) through to large serve bags (No. 8–16). Exact dimensions are listed on each product page. If you're not sure what size fits your serve, order a sample carton of two sizes and test them on the counter.

Do you dispatch same day?+

Yes, on stocked lines when you order before 4pm NZ business days. Brown flat paper bags are a stocked line. Orders placed after 4pm or on weekends go out the next business day.

Can I get a bulk discount on large orders?+

Bulk pricing applies at carton quantities — the price per bag drops as you buy more. For multi-site orders or large seasonal buys, contact us for a quote.

Can I get brown flat paper bags printed with my logo?+

Yes. Custom print is available but it's not a fast turnaround. You'll need to allow sufficient lead time and hit a minimum order quantity. Talk to us well before you need them — not the week before your opening date.

Are these bags suitable for greasy food like fish and chips?+

Standard kraft flat bags are not grease-resistant. For fish and chips or anything with a lot of oil, wrap the food first or check our greaseproof bags. Most fish and chip operators use a paper wrap inside the bag, which works fine.

Are brown flat paper bags recyclable in NZ?+

Standard uncoated kraft paper bags are recyclable and accepted in most NZ council kerbside paper recycling. They're also compostable. If you need specific certification documentation for a supplier audit, get in touch and we'll confirm what's available for the specific product.
